We arrived there at 7:00 pm to make sure we would be able to find our seats. I guess I've never been to The Aud before, because I didn't realize the seating was so steep and without guard rails of any kind.
The opener was a band called the Arkells. I had never heard of them before, but that isn't saying much. The band was tight, but they weren't really my cup of tea. During their set, the auditorium was only a little more than half-full. Nevertheless, they brought out as much enthusiasm as they could, and received a warm reception.
I visited the washroom during their performance and there was some girl sprawled in a stall, vomiting her guts out. Her friend/minder was standing there, arranging a ride home for her. How lame, drinking so much that you miss the headliner!
Personally, I was just patiently putting in time until the legendary Hip went on. The Arkells went on around 8:00 and finished at 8:35 for a 25-minute intermission. After venturing outside in the bitter cold for a smoke (and to smell at the pot being smoked around us...drool) we returned to our precarious seats.
During their entire show, large amounts of pot was being smoked. I mean, a lot. My bestie and I made it a game to find the puffs of smoke every time the lights went bright for a few seconds. I didn't really mind at first (I just wish they'd brought enough to share), but after a while, the smoke and smell were so thick, my eyes were burning. Even the band noticed. They didn't mind.
